Dealing with Sharps and Proper Disposal
What are Sharps?
Sharps include needles, syringes, razor blades, and broken glass.
How do I dispose of them?
Around the lab are two sizes of containers for disposing these items.
Small Container: are sticker labeled beakers located through-out the lab.
- these are great for counter top locations
- labels are self made.
- empty into a Large Container when full.
- new containers may be purchased at Chemstores.
Large Container: are red hazard boxes located under the work bench and next to the little warm room.
- these are for larger glass items or for smaller containers to be emptied into.
- label with "Nonhazardous Broken Glass" or "Hazardous Broken Glass".
- call 6-3192 (EHS) for pickup when full.
Razor Box: is the yellow box in the fume hood.
- this is for razor blades and injection needles.
- these items can poke through the heavy duty bags and need to be further contained.
Please remind all your lab workers to be certain that ANY SHARPS lab waste must be put into labeled SHARPS containers and NEVER put into regular wastebaskets. Sharps include needles, syringes, razor blades, and broken glass. This is a serious worker safety issue and we must all pay attention to our work habits to be sure we are not putting other people at risk of injury.
Razor Blades
While very useful in a lab setting, razor blades must not be left out on lab benches or loose in drawers.
During non-use: wrap in original cardboard sleeve, or stab into a piece of styrofoam.
