Reusing 100 mm diameter Falcon #3003 polystyrene Petri dishes

Rules for saving used dishes

  • The dishes have had only fish, embryo medium and/or fish water in them. No contaminants such as PTU, vital dyes or pharmaceutical agents have been added to the medium.
  • There is no writing on the dishes or lids. On the other hand, if you use a Petri dish with a contaminant, please write this on the dish and lid with sharpie.
  • There is nothing like dried fish or debris stuck on the dishes.

Bleach bucket solution (0.003% sodium hypochlorite)

For a 10L carboy:

Add 6 ml of 5.25% sodium hypochlorite. Fill to 10 L with tap water. (Run tap until water runs clear of dissolved minerals).

Protocol

  • Place the dishes in the dish bleach bucket and the lids in the lid bleach bucket on the Petri dish cart.
  • Soak Petri dishes/lids a minimum of 1 hour.
    • Putting a lid on the bucket with a sign saying “Add no new dishes” at least an hour before rinsing will assure all have had at least an hour in bleach.
  • Rinse individual dishes and lids one by one under running tap water and place in a bucket of clean water. Soak for about one hour in with tap running into bucket; bleach residue is bad for fish.
  • Take out the dishes and lids and spread them out on a clean drying rack. When dry, stack in a Petri dish rack labeled “Dishes for Re-Use”.
