EHS Pickups

Procedure: Hazardous Sharps, Nonsharps, and Nonhazardous Sharps

  1. Before you call EHS, make sure everything you want them to pick up is tagged. The tags are found in the top drawer across from the fume hood. On one of the manilla tags, write the details for the pickup (contents: hazardous nonsharp, hazardous sharp, or nonhazardous sharp) and the type of container (bag). On the back side, paste one of the stickers that has lab info (also found in the drawer).
  2. Nonsharps do not need to be double-bagged. Twist the top of the bag shut, secure with a rubber band, and put the tag around the top. Leave next to the trash can.
  3. Sharps of any kind must be double- or triple-bagged so that nothing pokes out. After you've accomplished this, secure the top with a rubber band and tag it. Leave by the trash can.
  4. Call EHS (6-3192) and tell them the lab name and building (Kimmel lab in Huestis), the room number (306), the lab phone number (6-4506), your name, and what you need EHS to pick up (e.g., one bag of hazardous nonsharps and one bag of hazardous sharps).

Procedure: Fume Hood Containers

  1. Again, you must tag everything you would like EHS to pick up. Bottles should be at least half full but not completely full.
  2. On the 'contents' side of the manilla tag, break down the ingredients (list is on the fume hood and [Safety/EHS chemicals|here]]). For example, don't put "Alizarin Red,' break it down into Alizarin Red S, Glycerol, 1M Tris pH 7.5, and Water in their respective percentages.
  3. Put a lab info sticker on the back of the tag.
  4. If a container has more than one ingredient you should also use one of the small white papers, where people should write down the chemical breakdowns of everything they put in the container. If they haven't, just write down the same breakdown you put on the manilla tag.
  5. Bottles of chemicals should be in secondary containers too. All bottles must have a cap on them.
  6. Leave the bottles in the fume hood to be picked up.
  7. Call EHS (6-3192) and tell them the lab name and building (Kimmel lab in Huestis), the room number (306), the lab phone number (6-4506), your name, and the number and size of containers you need picked up (e.g., two large bottles, one small bottle, and a little container of batteries).
